About this Stone
A 15th-century tower house rises from the edge of Lough Leane, its well-preserved stone walls commanding a dramatic lakeside setting. Legend holds that this was the last stronghold in Munster to surrender during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland, falling only after an audacious water-based attack. The castle’s strategic position and romantic history have made it one of the area’s most iconic sights, drawing visitors to explore its fortified chambers and absorb centuries of Irish history from its ramparts.
