About this Stone
One of Dublin’s most iconic landmarks, this cathedral was originally founded in 1030 by Viking king Sitric Silkenbeard, making it one of the city’s oldest buildings. The structure is renowned for its stunning medieval architecture and its remarkable crypt—the largest in Ireland—which houses unique artifacts including the mummified remains known as the “cat and rat.” A tiny penguin stone now rests somewhere within these centuries-old walls, a playful secret hidden among the echoes of a thousand years of history.
