About this Stone
This village stands out as one of Slovakia’s most distinctive settlements, famous for its striking black timber houses adorned with traditional white geometric patterns. These decorations originated as a practical wood-preservation technique but evolved into a celebrated expression of local folk art. The settlement dates back at least to the 13th century, though its current iconic appearance largely took shape after a catastrophic fire in 1921, when residents carefully rebuilt their homes in this distinctive style. Today it holds the distinction of being the world’s first folk architecture reserve, making it a remarkable open-air museum of vernacular design and cultural heritage. The charming streets reward exploration, offering a genuine sense of stepping into Slovakia’s artistic past.
