About this Stone
This bastion, part of the city’s impressive Venetian walls, stands as a testament to 16th-century strategic military architecture. It is most famous for housing the tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis, the celebrated author of Zorba the Greek, whose epitaph reads, “I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free.” An interesting aspect of the bastion is that its construction utilized materials from older ruins, including ancient Greek and Roman sites—a common practice to save resources during that era. The spot blends layers of history, from classical antiquity through the Venetian period, making it a meaningful destination for those interested in both literary and architectural heritage.
