About this Stone
Sitting high above the city, this fortress covers a large hilltop area and has guarded the region for well over 1,000 years. Its origins trace back to the Byzantine era, with major expansions during medieval Serbian rule and later the Ottoman period—a layered history of empires that built and rebuilt these walls to control the important trade routes passing through. From the viewpoint, the panoramic vista stretches across red-tiled rooftops, the river winding below, and the surrounding mountains rising in the distance. Wandering the fortress grounds and old stone walls offers both historical immersion and some of the best views in the area.
