About this Stone
A historical fortress commanding the center of the city, built in the 17th century by the Venetians with robust stone walls, four bastions, and a central tower that once served strategic defensive purposes. Today it houses the Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria, where exhibits detail the region’s rich maritime and military past. The citadel offers panoramic views across the city and the Adriatic coastline. The spot sits near one of the world’s best-preserved Roman theaters, a 1st-century arena still used for events and concerts today—a striking blend of ancient and medieval heritage layered into a single landscape. Beneath the fortress itself lies another layer of history worth exploring. From the top of the citadel, you can take in views of both the arena and the surrounding city.
