About this Stone
This regional park encompasses one of Europe’s most remarkable cave systems, set within a vast limestone plateau between 420 and 450 meters elevation. The underground landscape is a cathedral of geology—collapsed dolines, over six kilometers of passages plunging more than 200 meters deep, cascading waterfalls, and one of the largest known subterranean chambers. The sheer scale and intricacy of the formations earned UNESCO World Heritage designation, and deservedly so. Visitors descend into a realm where the tour stops at key vantage points, each revealing new dimensions of the cavern’s otherworldly character. The stone here was placed at the second major stop, tucked into a crevice small enough to require kneeling to locate—deliberately positioned to become part of the cave’s ancient world rather than intrude upon it. The darkness and acoustics of the underground passages, combined with the impossibility of GPS signals at such depth, mean that once hidden, the stone may well remain undiscovered even by those who placed it, having truly merged with the stone around it.
