About this Stone
Holyrood Park spreads across 640 acres in the heart of the city, just a short walk from the Royal Mile. The park’s crown jewel is an ancient volcano rising 251 metres above sea level, offering sweeping views across the cityscape. Beyond its dramatic geology, the spot is layered with history — it’s home to one of four hill forts dating back roughly two thousand years, their earthworks still remarkably well preserved. The area’s scientific importance earned it designation as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, thanks to its diverse plant life and geological character. Standing here, you’re walking through multiple layers of Edinburgh’s past while enjoying some of the finest vantage points in the city.
