About this Stone
Founded in 1191, this cathedral stands as the national cathedral of the Church of Ireland and carries centuries of remarkable history within its walls. Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver’s Travels, is buried here, and the cathedral’s world-renowned choir—established in 1432—continues to perform daily during school term, maintaining a musical tradition stretching back nearly six centuries. During the sixteenth century, the building also served as a courthouse, adding another layer to its complex past. Walking around the grounds reveals the accumulated significance of nearly nine hundred years of Irish history and culture.
