About this Stone
Built directly into solid rock, this church is a stunning example of modernist architecture designed by Finnish brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen. Construction began in 1968 and opened to the public the following year, creating one of Helsinki’s most distinctive landmarks. The rough, rocky interior walls give the space remarkable acoustics, which has made it a sought-after venue for concerts and musical performances over the decades. A copper dome, supported by concrete ribs and measuring 24 meters in diameter, crowns the structure, creating an interplay of industrial materials and natural stone that feels both contemplative and boldly contemporary. The rocky surfaces throughout provide countless nooks and crannies—perfect for hiding a small penguin among the stones.
