About this Stone
This coastal fortress was commissioned by King John II of Aragon as a gift for Queen Juana Enriquez and constructed in 1468 under the supervision of Giovanni Cabastida, a loyal chamberlain from Barcelona. Strategically positioned at the entrance of the port channel, the castle served dual purposes—defending against Turkish and Barbary pirate incursions while overseeing maritime trade and safeguarding grain reserves. The fortress stands near the Brucoli Lighthouse, established in 1911 and affectionately known as “Faro dell’Antico Castello Regina Giovanna.” The lighthouse was transformed into a luxury resort in 2017, offering visitors a unique blend of historical atmosphere and modern comfort within this layered landscape of medieval defense and contemporary hospitality.
