About this Stone
This striking late-Gothic church stands on the banks of the Limmat River, its name a reminder of its origins on a small island completely surrounded by water. Today bridges and paths connect it to the mainland, weaving it into the old town’s fabric. The spot holds profound historical weight—it marks where Zurich’s patron saints, Felix and Regula, were believed to have been executed by the Romans. Legend tells that after their beheading, the saints picked up their heads and walked uphill to their burial place, now commemorated by the nearby Grossmünster. The juxtaposition of this dark history with the serene riverside setting makes it a place layered with meaning and atmosphere.
