About this Stone
This travertine lake holds the distinction of being Slovakia’s largest, and since 1967 it has been protected as a natural formation of exceptional value. The dramatic crater-like shape—bordered by a prominent rock rim of 1 to 2 meters—was not born from volcanic fire or cosmic impact, despite what its name might suggest. Instead, it tells a subtler geological story: mineral-rich water deposited travertine, building up a mound that eventually collapsed, creating the depression now filled with mineral water. The steep-sided rim and the interplay of water and mineral geology make this a unique landscape, shaped by forces far older and more patient than any explosion.
