About this Stone
Perched on the slopes of Cave Hill, this castle overlooks the city with sweeping views all the way to Belfast Lough. Built in the 19th century by the 3rd Marquess of Donegall, it replaced an earlier 12th-century Norman fortress that once stood nearby. Beautiful gardens surround the grounds, famous for their “cat garden,” where nine cat statues are hidden—a local legend says good fortune will come to visitors who spot them all. A penguin stone now quietly joins the feline guardians as a little surprise for future treasure hunters.
