About this Stone
This fortified palace stands in Piazza Malatesta as one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, though only fragments of its former grandeur survive today. Commissioned by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, Lord of the city, and designed with the assistance of Filippo Brunelleschi, construction began in 1438 as a declaration of power and prestige. Once a architectural marvel, the palace featured 160 windows and six soaring towers, surrounded by a deep moat with four drawbridges and covering roughly 3,000 square meters. Its strategic position made it integral to the city’s medieval defenses, with the ancient Roman city walls running through the surrounding area. Despite the ravages of time, visiting this spot offers a tangible connection to Renaissance ambition and military engineering.
