About this Stone

pania Dolina is a village and municipality in central Slovakia, near Banská Bystrica. Although its permanent population does not exceed 200 people, it is a picturesque historic village situated 728 m above sea level, and now, a penguin stone awaits you there. The village has a long history of copper mining, dating back to the Roman era. In the Middle Ages, it became one of Europe’s most important mining centers, particularly during the 15th and 16th centuries. The mining heritage of Špania Dolina is well-preserved, with numerous historical buildings and structures related to mining, including old shafts, tunnels, and the Klopačka bell tower, which used to signal the beginning and end of miners’ shifts. Up on the hill, you can find an information board, and in one of its legs is a hidden penguin stone.
