#279 Ibusuki

📍 Ibusuki, Kagoshima, Japan

About this Stone

This scenic coastal city sits on the southern tip of Kyushu, known for its unique natural hot sand baths where visitors soak in naturally heated volcanic sand for relaxation and health benefits. Stunning views of Kinko Bay and the nearby Mount Kaimon—often called the ‘Fuji of Satsuma’ for its distinctive conical shape—define the landscape. The area thrives on its onsen culture, subtropical climate, and local culinary traditions including Satsuma-age fried fish cakes and sweet potatoes. One of the region’s most captivating geothermal phenomena is the Nagashi-bina Festival, held annually in early March, where elaborately dressed Hina dolls are set afloat on bamboo boats down the Koyama River in a stunning cultural event that blends Shinto beliefs with deep-rooted local customs, all meant to pray for good health and protection from misfortune. The stone rests at a beautiful beach where a thermal spring emerges, reaching over 80 degrees, so steam rises constantly from the sand and water.
