About this Stone
This alpine lake in the Hochschwab mountains is a study in dramatic seasonal transformation. Surrounded by three peaks—Pribitz, Meßnerin, and Trenchtling—and dense forest, the water here shifts between two entirely different worlds. In winter and early spring, it lies shallow and approachable, with meadows around it open for hiking. But as the snow melts in late spring, the lake swells to depths of 12 meters, submerging the surrounding meadow and hiking trails beneath crystalline water. This seasonal flooding creates an ethereal underwater landscape that has made it a destination for divers seeking something truly unusual. The contrast between its calm, accessible winter state and its dramatic spring transformation makes this a compelling place to witness nature’s cycle in action.
