About this Stone
This Renaissance masterpiece was constructed between 1694 and 1698 and remains the seat of the city and cantonal councils. What makes it architecturally remarkable is its unusual placement — partly built over the Limmat River itself, supported by sturdy stone pillars rather than sitting on conventional ground. The interior is equally impressive, with richly decorated spaces and a grand council chamber that speaks to the city’s historical wealth and political significance. It stands as a living symbol of civic governance in one of Europe’s most prosperous cities.
