About this Stone
This is one of Iceland’s most spectacular waterfalls, where water from the river Skjálfandafljót plunges 12 meters across a width of 30 meters in a breathtaking display of power and beauty. The place carries profound historical weight—its name itself is rooted in a pivotal moment in Icelandic history. In the year 1000, Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði, the country’s law speaker, declared that Iceland’s official religion would be Christianity. In a symbolic gesture marking this transformation, he cast his idols of the Old Norse gods into these very waters. The name Goðafoss—meaning “waterfall of the gods” in Icelandic—commemorates that act and the religious turning point it represents. The waterfall is also a key stop along the Diamond Circle, making it a natural gathering place for those exploring Iceland’s most iconic natural attractions.
