About this Stone
This breathtaking canyon in southeast Iceland was carved by the Fjaðrá River and glacial meltwater over approximately 9,000 years, reaching depths of up to 100 meters and stretching 2 kilometers. It’s easily accessible from the main Ring Road, with parking available near the top where you can walk along the rim and take in views of a beautiful waterfall and the dramatic landscape. A path descends from the parking area, offering a different perspective of the massive rocky walls and valley below. For those with sturdy boots and a sense of adventure, hiking through the canyon itself is possible, though it involves wading through the river. The towering stone walls and the contrast between the rushing water and the surrounding terrain make this a striking destination for anyone exploring Iceland’s natural wonders.
