About this Stone
This Victorian fountain stands in the heart of West Princes Street Gardens, a striking cast-iron monument painted in vibrant golds and greens. Designed by French artist Jean-Baptiste Jules Klagmann and cast in a French foundry during the mid-1800s, it was originally displayed at the Great Exhibition in London in 1862 before being purchased by local gunmaker Daniel Ross, who donated it to the city. The fountain captures the opulence of the Victorian era while maintaining an unexpected serenity within the urban landscape, especially with Edinburgh Castle rising majestically in the background. A large tree grows nearby, and within its trunk at roughly eye level, a penguin stone now rests among the branches.
