About this Stone
Perched on the slopes of the Vršac Mountains, this striking medieval fortress dates to the 15th century and is believed to have been commissioned by Serbian despot Đurađ Branković. The castle served as a crucial defensive stronghold against Ottoman invasions, and its imposing stone tower remains the best-preserved section of the structure. What makes this place particularly fascinating is the likelihood that it was built atop the ruins of a Roman-era fortress, creating a palimpsest of military architecture spanning centuries. From its elevated position, the castle commands panoramic views across the surrounding plains—a vantage point that explains its strategic importance in the region’s turbulent medieval history.
