#398 Odawara Castle

📍 Odawara Castle, Odawara, Japan

About this Stone

A historic fortress that played a crucial role during the Sengoku period, initially built in the mid-15th century as the stronghold of the powerful Hōjō clan, who controlled much of the Kantō region. One of the most fascinating legends surrounding this place is the tale of the “Ninja Cats of Odawara.” According to folklore, during Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s siege in 1590, defenders used trained ninja cats to deliver messages and spy on enemy forces. Though the castle ultimately fell, this story adds to its mystique. Today, it has been reconstructed and is a popular historical site, offering stunning views of Sagami Bay and a glimpse into Japan’s samurai past.
