About this Stone
This serene and iconic destination attracts visitors from around the globe to experience one of Japan’s most culturally significant natural spaces. The park is home to over 1,000 freely roaming sika deer, considered sacred in Japanese culture and designated as a natural treasure. These gentle animals are known for their unique ability to bow to visitors, a behavior encouraged by tourists offering shika senbei—special crackers sold throughout the park. The deer hold deep spiritual significance: they are believed to be messengers of the gods, a belief rooted in legend that a deity from the nearby Kasuga Shrine rode to Nara on a white deer. This spiritual connection transforms the park into far more than a wildlife destination; it’s a place where nature, culture, and mythology interweave, making it a haven of cultural and spiritual importance.
