About this Stone
An iconic Lutheran parish church that dominates the Reykjavik skyline with its striking architectural design. Designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, its towering concrete facade and distinctive spire draw inspiration from Iceland’s dramatic natural landscapes, particularly the basalt column formations found throughout the island. Rising 74.5 meters, it’s one of Iceland’s tallest structures, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city from its observation tower. The design is said to have also been inspired by the shape of Thor’s hammer, as a nod to Iceland’s Viking age history.
