This place stands on a sandstone outcrop overlooking the city, blending centuries of history with sweeping views. Originally founded by William the Conqueror in 1068 as a wooden fort, it later became a grand ducal mansion after the medieval castle was destroyed during the English Civil War. The spot is associated with the legend of Robin Hood, whose stories are set in nearby Sherwood Forest. One of the most fascinating features beneath the castle is the network of man-made caves carved into the rock, some dating back over 1,000 years.
