#443 Admont Abbey

📍 Admont Abbey, Admont, Austria

About this Stone

This Benedictine monastery, founded in 1074, sits at the foot of the Gesäuse Mountains and stands as a spiritual and historical centerpiece of the region. Its architecture is stunning, but the true marvel lies within: the library, completed in 1776, is the largest monastic library in the world. Spanning over 70 meters in length, it’s a masterpiece of Baroque design, with intricate frescoes by Bartolomeo Altomonte adorning the ceiling and walls lined with white and gold shelves holding more than 70,000 volumes. A delightful architectural secret runs throughout the space—hidden doors built into the bookcases blend seamlessly into the walls, allowing monks to move discreetly between rooms. The gardens surrounding the abbey provide a peaceful setting rich with history and contemplation.
