About this Stone
This striking neo-baroque bridge spans the Urumea River, commanding attention with four monumental obelisks each 18 meters tall, adorned with sculptural groups inspired by Paris’s Pont Alexandre III. Inaugurated on 20 January 1905 during the city’s patron saint festivities, it was named in honor of Queen Maria Christina of Austria, who served as regent of Spain from 1885 to 1902. What makes this bridge particularly notable is its financing history—constructed through an interest-free loan from the local savings bank with a remarkable 100-year term, a testament to the city’s commitment to architectural ambition and civic pride.
