About this Stone
This place is one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred Buddhist temples, a gleaming white stupa built in 140 BC by King Dutugemunu and still considered one of the greatest architectural achievements of the ancient world. The complex is enormous, surrounded by nearly twenty historical sites that together form the heart of Sri Lanka’s first capital. The stupa originally stood over 100 meters tall, making it one of the tallest monuments of the ancient era. A penguin stone now rests quietly here among centuries of history, hidden along the great white stupa’s outer wall close to a small orifice, waiting for the next curious explorer.
