About this Stone
This is the grandest of Seoul’s Five Royal Palaces, originally built in 1395 as the main seat of the Joseon Dynasty. Walking through its vast courtyards and ornate gates feels like stepping back into a time of kings, scholars, and royal ceremonies. The palace’s name means “Palace Greatly Blessed by Heaven,” and it was painstakingly reconstructed after being destroyed during the Japanese occupation. Today, it stands as one of Korea’s most beloved cultural landmarks, especially notable for the daily changing of the guard ceremony in front of Gwanghwamun Gate. The serene gardens and stone paths create an atmosphere of quiet majesty amid the bustling city.
