About this Stone
This striking sculpture brings one of the islands’ most chilling legends to life. The ‘Nykur,’ or water horse, is a mythical creature said to lure people onto its back before dragging them into lakes and fjords. Standing watch near the shore, the statue was created by artist Pól Skarðenni and captures the eerie power of the legend with its half-submerged form. Locals still tell stories of how the Nykur’s whinny could be heard echoing across the water on quiet nights. The spot combines folklore, bronze and stone artistry, and the dramatic coastal landscape that makes these islands so atmospheric.
