This serene alpine lake is renowned for its striking dark waters, which give it its name—meaning “Black Lake.” At an elevation of around 1,500 meters, this small yet enchanting body of water covers approximately 4 hectares and reaches depths of up to 8 meters. Surrounded by lush meadows and dramatic limestone peaks, it draws hikers and nature lovers exploring the expansive Tauplitzalm, one of Europe’s largest high alpine pastures. According to local legend, the lake is said to be bottomless and home to a mystical water spirit who guards its peaceful stillness, only appearing to those pure of heart.
