About this Stone
At the very eastern edge of Japan, this windswept cape in Hokkaido is the country’s easternmost accessible point, meaning it is one of the first places in Japan to greet the sunrise each day. On clear mornings, you can even see the disputed Habomai Islands shimmering on the horizon, a rare and powerful reminder of the region’s complex history. The coastline is wild and dramatic, dotted with lighthouses and surrounded by cold, nutrient-rich waters that attract seabirds and marine life. It is said that the sunrise here is among the earliest in Japan, making it a symbolic place of new beginnings.
