About this Stone
Rising from the calm waters of the Nile, this elegant temple complex feels almost mythical, as if floating between worlds. Dedicated primarily to the goddess Isis, it became one of the last active centers of ancient Egyptian religion, with worship continuing here even after much of Egypt had turned to Christianity. The entire structure was carefully dismantled and relocated in the 1960s to save it from flooding after the construction of the Aswan High Dam, moved stone by stone to nearby Agilkia Island. Walking through its towering columns and detailed reliefs, you can almost hear echoes of ancient rituals carried by the river breeze.
