About this Stone
The Church of St. Margaret stands as a Baroque masterpiece, a ‘pearl’ of the Vysočina region seamlessly woven into the grand chateau ensemble. Built between 1716 and 1782 under the architectural vision of Jakob Prandtauer and Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt, the church showcases an oval nave, a soaring dome, and twin towers that dominate the skyline. The interior takes your breath away: a monumental 450 m² ceiling fresco by Karel František Tepper depicts heavenly martyrs, crowned by the “God’s Eye” at 44 meters high—an artistic triumph enhanced by later works from Jan Knor and Otmar Oliva. Adjacent to the church, the tower itself offers a remarkable vantage point. From its heights, you can take in sweeping panoramas of the meticulously landscaped French parterre and the broader castle gardens. The climb is accessible to visitors without requiring guided tours, rewarding those who reach the top with expansive views across the grounds.
