About this Stone
From a wooden bench beneath shaded larch trees at 1,650 meters, this viewpoint delivers a jaw-dropping 360° panorama across some of Central Europe’s most dramatic alpine terrain. Below spreads the peaceful Steirersee, the largest of six mountain lakes that dot this high plateau, ringed by flowery meadows and larch woods. The jagged ridges of the Totes Gebirge rise dramatically behind—peaks like the iconic Sturzhahn, first climbed by Heinrich Harrer, and Traweng soar overhead. Eastward, neighboring Schwarzensee and Großsee shimmer in the distance, while the western horizon is dominated by the massive Grimming and the glaciated Dachstein massif. This plateau itself is remarkable as Central Europe’s largest lake plateau, a serene place to rest, sip coffee, and absorb the sweeping Styrian alpine landscape that stretches in every direction.
