About this Stone
One of the most iconic spots of the ancient Maya world, this central plaza is surrounded by towering temples that rise above the jungle canopy. Once the heart of a powerful city, it was where ceremonies, rituals, and daily life unfolded centuries ago. Some of the tallest temples here still allow visitors to climb above the treetops and spot wildlife—toucans and monkeys—especially at sunrise. The contrast between the ancient stone structures and the vibrant jungle that has reclaimed much of the site creates an atmosphere of timeless wonder.
