About this Stone
From the viewpoint, the path descends to this stunning alpine lake, one of Europe’s largest high-altitude lake plateaus. Sitting at an elevation of around 1,450 meters, the water is known for its crystal-clear, emerald hue and tranquil surroundings, framed by the mighty peaks of the Totes Gebirge. The lake spans approximately 500 meters in length and reaches depths of up to 30 meters, fed by underground springs and rainwater that maintain its pristine clarity year-round. Local legend tells of a water spirit, or Wassernixe, said to dwell in the depths, protecting the lake’s purity and luring travelers with her song—a story passed down through generations in the Salzkammergut region. Popular for hiking, swimming (though the water is chilly even in summer), and photography, the area is part of a nature reserve and offers breathtaking views, especially in autumn when the larch trees turn golden. A wooden bench provides a peaceful spot to rest and take in the surroundings.
