#619 Phillip Island

📍 Phillip Island, Melbourne, Australia

About this Stone

Approximately 125 kilometers southeast of Melbourne, this island is renowned for its vibrant wildlife and stunning coastal landscapes. It’s home to the world’s largest colony of little penguins, with an estimated population of around 40,000 individuals. Each evening at dusk, visitors gather to witness these charming seabirds—the smallest penguin species at just 33 centimeters tall—waddle ashore in groups, returning to their burrows after a day of fishing at sea. This nightly spectacle has become Australia’s most popular wildlife attraction, drawing over 700,000 visitors annually. The island’s rehabilitation center has successfully rescued and released penguins like Silver, a 22-year-old who reappeared after a 16-year absence, making her one of the oldest known in the colony.
