About this Stone
This place is one of five craters within Mount Aso, the second largest active volcano in Japan after Mount Fuji. A helicopter accident two weeks before visitors arrived had closed access to the main crater, Mt. Naka, but this alternative proved spectacular. From these slopes, you can watch Mt. Naka continuously releasing smoke across the vast caldera—a powerful reminder that the landscape is very much alive. The Aso caldera itself is one of the largest in the world, stretching roughly 25 kilometers north to south and 18 kilometers east to west. The volcanic terrain here is dramatic and geologically significant, a place where you’re standing on one of Earth’s most active geological systems.
