About this Stone
A mysterious ruin perched above St Margaret’s Loch in Holyrood Park, this chapel offers stunning views across the city and toward Arthur’s Seat. Dating back at least to the 15th century—possibly older—it once served as a place of worship for local villagers and pilgrims. Today only portions of the stone walls remain, but the dramatic silhouette still captures the imagination. Historians speculate it may have been linked to nearby Holyrood Abbey, and legends suggest it provided refuge for travelers and fishermen. Despite its age, the rugged beauty continues to inspire artists, hikers, and history enthusiasts, making it a haunting yet peaceful landmark in the heart of Edinburgh’s natural landscape.
