About this Stone
Above the heart of Graz, this green hill is crowned with fortifications, winding paths, and sweeping views over Austria’s second-largest city. Once an almost impenetrable medieval stronghold, it was so formidable that even Napoleon could not conquer it by force; he had to order its demolition by treaty in 1809, sparing only the beloved clock tower and bell tower after locals paid a ransom to save them. Today, the hill is a peaceful park where visitors can ride the funicular or climb the iconic stairs to enjoy gardens and lookout points.
