About this Stone
This place stands as one of Seoul’s most important historical sites, preserving the stories of Korea’s struggle for freedom during the Japanese occupation. Once a prison where independence activists were imprisoned and tortured, the former jail now serves as a powerful museum that guides visitors through its cells, underground tunnels, and heartbreaking testimonies. Over 40,000 Koreans were incarcerated here between 1908 and 1945, including well-known figures of the independence movement. The surrounding park offers a quiet, reflective space with memorials and statues honoring those who fought for Korea’s future, making it a place that encourages learning and reflection on the resilience that shaped modern Korea.
