#842 The Dragon Oak

📍 The Dragon Oak, Little Carpathians, Slovakia

About this Stone

This ancient oak has stood sentinel in the landscape for approximately 600 years, its massive trunk measuring 677 cm in circumference and reaching a height of about 24 meters. The tree earned its evocative name from local photographer Tibi Végh, who recognized in its form the silhouette of a dragon seated in eternal watch. The Dragon Oak has witnessed centuries of human history—from the first settlers who built the nearby Pajštún Castle to merchants, Croatian colonists, and the construction of a steam-powered narrow-gauge forest railway that once wound through the valley. It was already ancient when Columbus was born, a humbling perspective on deep time. In 2022, the tree received Slovak Tree of the Year recognition, followed by second place in the 2023 European Tree of the Year competition, honoring both its biological significance and its role as a symbol of the region’s natural heritage. The oak sits within a protected landscape area, and in April 2025 it underwent professional arboricultural care including root system protection, removal of parasitic plants, and specialized treatments designed to enhance biodiversity and ensure its survival for future generations.
