About this Stone
The town walls wrap around the old city like a protective belt, connecting the fortress high above with the shoreline below and forming one of the best preserved medieval fortification systems in the Adriatic. Built and expanded over many centuries, these walls were designed to defend against Venetian, Ottoman, and other regional threats, and today they still trace the steep mountainside in a dramatic line of stone. Walking along sections of the walls offers constant views over the red rooftops and the shimmering bay beyond, making it easy to understand why this entire system is now part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
