About this Stone
A romantic neo-Gothic masterpiece in South Bohemia, this castle began as a 13th-century Gothic fortress before undergoing a dramatic transformation between 1841 and 1871. Inspired by Windsor Castle in England, the reconstruction was directed by Viennese architect Franz Beer under the patronage of Prince Johann Adolf II of Schwarzenberg. The result is a stunning 140-room palace featuring 11 towers, ornate interiors, and an expansive English-style park that exemplifies 19th-century aristocratic ambition. The castle was remarkably modern for its time, among the first in the Czech lands to boast central heating and running water. The grounds offer peaceful spots to sit and reflect on centuries of history, with mature trees dotting the landscape.
