About this Stone
At the top of the hike above the bay, the fortress sits like a stone crown over the water, with massive walls and towers built between the 9th and 19th centuries to protect the city from invasions. The fortress stretches all the way up the mountain with over a thousand steps, and its strategic position once made it one of the most important defensive sites on the Adriatic coast. The sweeping views over the bay and old town below reward the climb, and the ruins themselves tell the story of centuries of maritime power and conflict.
