About this Stone
This former railway station building has been transformed into one of the city’s most important cultural museums, documenting the area’s layered history. The structure itself carries weight—it was partially destroyed during the devastating 1963 earthquake that reshaped the city, and now it stands as both a survivor and a repository of that pivotal moment. The collections held within span archaeology, history, and ethnology, preserving the threads of life across centuries. In front of the building, stone monuments and tombstones are arranged in an open display, creating a quiet, reflective atmosphere that invites contemplation. It’s a place where past meets present, where architecture and artifacts speak to resilience and memory.
