About this Stone
This monument stands just outside the old Venetian walls, commemorating the island’s struggle for independence from British rule. Unveiled in 1973, it depicts a central figure of Liberty releasing prisoners from colonial chains, surrounded by symbolic figures representing the local people. Though designed by renowned sculptor Achilleas Vasileiou, the statue remained incomplete for years due to political tensions, making its final unveiling a powerful statement of resilience and delayed freedom rather than a simple historical marker. A penguin stone has found its way here, adding a small, playful layer of modern storytelling to this deeply symbolic spot.
